Principal's Address

It is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the eleventh session of the Rato Bangala School Model United Nations (RBS-MUN), to be held from December 16-18, 2016. Rato Bangala School held its first Model UN conference in 2005 and has continued this tradition annually since then. Each year, we have enjoyed watching this student-run conference getting bigger and better, with the student organizers becoming more seasoned and thorough.

As in the past, RBS-MUN 2016 will continue its tradition of excellence. This year, we are proud to offer diverse and unique committees ranging from the Historic Security Council and ICC to African Union and WTO. Some of the exciting new committees that promise to be hard to walk away from are the India and Nepal Cabinets and the FIFA.

Our conference strives to bring the best experience possible in the depth, breadth and quality of its substantive debate. I would like to congratulate the RBS-MUN 2016 team for taking on the challenge of organizing an international conference of this scope and believe that they can bring a stimulating and memorable experience to you.

I wish you all the best as you work towards finding solutions to regional and global problems. Your ambassadorial roles will take you to discuss issues ranging from the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship between India and Nepal to the Boko Haram Conflict; from issues surrounding the ongoing battle in Syria to eradicating poverty through an inclusive green economy and implementation of sustainable carbon neutral fuels; from labor rights in emerging economies to FIFA reforms and much more.

RBSMUN 2016 will provide you the platform to do something about the growing problems that this world is facing. The world needs leaders who care to change the state it is in and you will work and learn about how to bring about this change. We believe that the, “thinkers and dreamers” of this conference will grow up to become leaders who can empathize and work together to bring about real solutions to issues facing the world.

A very special welcome to our guest delegates from far and near who will be participating in the Rato Bangala Model United Nations 2016.

Delegates, you will definitely look at the world differently after this Model UN experience. Best wishes for a stimulating and successful conference.

Thank you.

Secretary General's Address

Dear Delegates,

It is with immense pleasure that I welcome you to join us for the 11th session of the Rato Bangala School Model United Nations Conference.  We at RBSMUN 2016 have given whatever it takes to ensure that this year’s MUN will maintain the prestige that Nepal’s first and biggest student run Model UN conference holds and we assure you delegates that you will have a memorable experience here at Rato Bangala School.

We at RBSMUN seek to welcome passionate and talented delegates from around the country and beyond to discuss on key international issues. Here, you must be prepared to solve problems that have consequential impacts on international welfare and humanity as a whole. During the three days of the conference, you have to come up with conclusions on issues that have left even the greatest of world leaders divided for decades.

Yet, at the end of those three days, I can promise that you will have developed crucial life skills such as problem solving, consensus building, critical thinking and many more. Most importantly, I assure you that you will be a more mature and changed individual after the intense debates, lobbying, and socializing that MUNs demand.

From Nepal’s oldest and biggest MUN conference, you can expect a lot. This year’s session entails 13 different UN as well as key political committees that look to come up with solutions on contemporary as well as historic issues. We have meticulously picked issues that have significant international relevance and hope that this will bring the best in terms of the discussion inside the committee. We also present to you some non-conventional committees including the India/Nepal bilateral cabinets, FIFA, and the International Criminal Court along with specialized committees such as the UNSC and the HSC.

This year, the conference will see the delegates of the SPECPOL addressing the Situation of Occupied Territories in Azerbaijan. The India/Nepal Cabinet will dwell on issues regarding the historic Trade and Transit treaty of 1960. Delegates of the Security will try to come into consensus on the issue of the Houthi insurgency in Yemen. Similarly, the International Criminal Court will proceed with the prosecutor of Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi.  Other committees will also discuss key issues such as the hosting of the 2022 World cup, historic issues such as the Bosnian War, burning issues like the formation of trade policies post BREXIT and many more.

At the end, I can assure you that the conference is going to be super exciting and I do encourage you to come. Lastly and most importantly, I am truly thankful to my team of executive board to help bring about this exceptional conference into function.

Deputy Secretary Generals' Address

In a world where radicalism and xenophobia dominate the status quo. Where children are used to carry out suicide attacks and become soldiers in wars they do not understand. Where conflicts are created on the basis of religious faith, humanity seems to have been lost somewhere between the rungs of war and terror. We have come to a point where we can only stop and wonder, can we help better the situation of our world?

It is our firm belief that we can.

The world today is a smaller place thanks to developments in technology. As a consequence, the conflict in Syria or the typhoons in Philippines is as much of a reality for all of us as it is for them. Therefore, it only seems right that we share the responsibility to resolve these problems. And that is what brings us here today.

Our 11th instalment of the Rato Bangala School Model United Nations breaks customs and sets new precedents. This year we have introduced new committees, invented and developed by the teams independently that look to address old issues in new ways. The Nepal-India bilateral Cabinet will seek to mend ties within a framework not usually associated with the UN and ever present committees such as the Security Council will discuss issues that are not often in the forefront of mainstream media.  We take pride in the fact that our team of chairs this year compromise of highly capable and proven individuals who have put in immense effort to bring you an experience like no other.

We at RBSMUN believe that empathy and the willingness to bring change know no physical and cultural boundaries. Geography and borders have been reduced to nothing more than bureaucratic hurdles and in this ever globalizing world, a conference can only be successful with a discussion of ideas from around the world.  With this belief in mind, we have invited delegates from all over the world.

Where war has failed, diplomacy has pushed humanity forward and when ideas diverge, debate and argument bring us closer.

We hope to see you in this forum for thinkers and dreamers.
