International Criminal Court

Created for the investigation and trials of individuals charged with crimes like genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, the International Criminal Court is an intergovernmental organization based in The Hague in the Netherlands. Under the Rome Statute, the treaty which serves as the ICC’s foundational and governing document, the ICC is intended to complement existing national judicial systems. So, it can only exercise its jurisdiction when certain conditions (like when national courts are unwilling to prosecute criminals) are met. Though it is independent from the United Nations, the Security Council has power to limit its functional independence. The ICC has 139 member states of which 31 have not ratified the Rome Statue.

Efforts to create a global criminal court goes as far back as the 19th Century when in 1872, one of the founders of the Red Cross proposed a court in response to the crimes of the Franco-Prussian war. This was followed by calls for an international judicial system after the 1919 Treaty of Versailles to try the War Criminals of World War I. It was not until 1998 that the aim of finalizing a treaty to serve as the ICC’s statue was made. And on 17 July 1998, the Rome Statue of the ICC was adopted and the ICC was formally established on 1 July 2002.

The ICC has four principal organs: The Presidency, Judicial Divisions, the Office of the Prosecutor, and the Registry. The Presidency is mainly responsible for the administration of the court, which comprises the President (Silvia Fernandez), vice presidents and three judges of the Court. The Judicial Divisions, consisting of 18 judges organized into 3 divisions, hold hearings before the court and make decisions on whether to confirm charges against the accused. The Office of the Prosecutor performs preliminary analysis on the information on crimes that it receives and determine if they meet the jurisdictional requirements for an investigation, after which it conducts investigations into the situation. The Registry provides administrative support to all of the organs of the Court and carries out its responsibilities in the areas of defense, victims and witnesses.

Aryan Maskay

Chair

The President of the Business Club and captain of RBS’s basketball team, Aryan is one of the most talented people you’ll ever come across. Having participated in an impressive total of 6 MUNs, including one international MUN, Aryan is a very diligent and passionate MUN-er. He is extremely helpful and with the vast pool of information in his head, he’ll have answers to all your questions (although he isn’t quite a human encyclopedia—yet). However, don’t let his innocent face fool you. He can be very strict when it comes to deadlines and the performance in the committee. So delegates, do your research well and don’t fool around in the committee; surely, with the powerful voice he has, he’ll make sure you won’t.

Then again, he has a gentle and kind personality, which makes him quite easy to talk to. You can always go up to him and have a quick chat about basketball or “that one episode” of Victorious or discuss about what the next season of Sherlock will be about. Not only an avid reader, but a fiery and intense gamer as well, you can only imagine how smart (and cool) your chair is.

He’ll make sure you have very fruitful debates in committee and that you enjoy yourself too. And by the end of the conference, you’ll have gained double the knowledge you had previously. Lastly, don’t forget to make him play the guitar during a motion of entertainment.

Prachi Adhikari

Vice chair

Prachi is the kind of person that most strive to be. She’s smart, she’s pretty, and she’s a hard worker who has her priorities set straighter than pretty much anyone else. In addition, she will be focused on whatever work she is assigned—completing it with dexterity and exactitude. But delegates, there is more than what meets the eye with Prachi. With her, expect the unexpected. One moment she may be criticizing the points that you raise in committee’s debate, and in the next she will be re-counting to you the most hilarious Hindi movie line.

Prachi will make sure that you guys will get your work done on time, while on the on the hand, she will also want the committee to be as entertaining and enjoyable as possible. She gets bored quite easily, so you guys will have to be as engaging as you can, either with seriously heated debates, or with uproarious motions of entertainment. She has had a total of 6 MUN experiences, from RBS MUNs to Cathedral MUN in India, so it’s fair to say that best dressed is not the only thing that she is capable of winning.

In short, your vice chair is quite easy to approach and is a very polite person. Besides that, she’s exceptionally rad and socially aware, so you can also expect intellectual conversations. While pushing delegates to pull their weight, she’ll also make sure that everyone has an unforgettable experience.

Manasa Gorkhaly

Moderator

Manasa is someone who spends sleepless nights organizing the subject notes of the day with precise color co-ordination and making sure that the tiniest details are in their right places (don't mind her slight OCD tendencies). These habits make her, without a doubt, a very diligent and punctual worker.

Having garnered a great deal of experience over 5 years of MUN-ing, she is one of the most approachable people to speak to about even your slightest apprehensions regarding debating or any kind of difficulty you've been facing in the committee. She is quite calm, yet can be a very perky person who will make your MUN experience enjoyable and undoubtedly memorable. You can usually find her with her close friends or at the basketball court, practicing her skills in the sport. When it comes to the committee, Manasa is looking forward to non-hesitant participation, punctuality regarding deadlines and most importantly a well-researched debate.

Known for her responsible and reliable nature, it is quite certain that she will leave no stone unturned in completing any task given to her with utmost dedication and precision. Mind you, she can make you work as well. But rest assured, with her composed and cheerful personality, she will ensure that you enjoy your committee and MUN experience to its full extent.
